Why choose obscure or frosted glass?
Obscure glass (also called frosted, textured or privacy glass) scatters light instead of letting you see straight through it. It’s not the same as tinted or coloured glass. It’s clear glass with a textured or acid-etched surface, so a room still feels bright while whoever’s inside stays out of view.
Privacy without losing light
A frosted or textured pane keeps a bathroom or ensuite bright during the day while blocking a clear view in from outside. You get the light of a window without the compromise of a curtain or blind.
A straightforward insurance replacement
Most obscure glass we fit is for older, single-glazed windows where the original pattern is no longer made. We work from a set of seven commonly available, safety-approved patterns that cover the vast majority of repairs, so we can quote fast without a long back-and-forth on discontinued glass types.

Cathedral
A hammered, wave-like texture that’s one of the most recognisable obscure glass patterns in older New Zealand homes. Cathedral lets in strong light while still breaking up a direct view through the pane, and it’s a common like-for-like match for original single-glazed bathroom and hallway windows.
Cotswold
A rippled, flowing vertical texture with a heavier obscuring effect than Cathedral. Cotswold suits bathroom and ensuite windows where you want more privacy without going fully opaque.
Etchlite
A smooth, satin-frosted finish, acid-etched for a fine, even texture. This is the classic “frosted glass” look most people picture, and it’s a popular choice for front doors, sidelights and feature panels as well as bathrooms.
Mistlite
A fine, woven-look texture that gives a soft, subtle obscuring effect. Mistlite is a common choice where you still want a light, contemporary look rather than a heavier pattern.
Narrow Reeded
Fine vertical ribbed lines that let through plenty of light while adding texture and visual interest. Narrow Reeded is popular for feature doors, cabinetry and internal partitions as well as windows.
Stippolyte
A fine, pebbled texture and one of the most requested patterns for insurance-related bathroom window replacements. Stippolyte gives solid obscuring with good light transmission, and it’s a common match for older single-glazed homes.
White Laminate
A laminated safety glass with a solid white interlayer for full privacy. Because it’s laminated, it also meets safety glass requirements, which makes it a good option anywhere you need both complete privacy and safety compliance, such as near doors or at low level.
